Count the number of Basketball Passes

August 31st, 2005

This is really cool :) Pop over here (Java, 7MB) (you need to press the play icon) and count the number of times the people wearing white shirts pass the basketball. Do not count the number of passes from people wearing black shirts.

Once you’ve done that, pop over here and see whether you passed the test :)

    SPOILER

Watch the video again - did you notice a gorilla walking into the video and dancing about?

But I thought we were counting the number of passes from people in white shirts. 15.

It was; it is supposed to be a demo of how you can miss a blindingly obvious thing staring you right in the face. It was in New Scientist and even though I knew there was going to be a gorilla I managed to miss it watching the people passing the ball.

this was used in many presentations to show that the young have better visual skills than those who didn’t grow up with technology… less than 100 adults out of over 1500 even noticed the gorilla… they say that if you show this to 5th and 6th grader, 90% of the time they get the right number of bounces and they completely notice the gorilla… its quite impressive how their visual skills are better
