Windows Update Nags

April 16th, 2006

I bet everyone has experienced this at some point - Windows XP has automatically updated itself and it keeps nagging you every 10 minutes to reboot your machine when all you want to do is to get some work done.

Luckily, it seems like you can change the amount of time between nags or disable it all together.

You can change this in the group policy:

"Start / Run / gpedit.msc / Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations"

  1. Windows Live Messenger Update
  2. Apple pushes Safari as iTunes Update
  3. Apple EULA forbid install of Safari on Windows
  4. Blog Update
  5. The mystery of the zero byte image

Or disable it completely. Even saves you from bandwidth consuming downloads (running on unpatched xp except blaster). Real (hardware) firewalls rule!

I used to have Automatic Update turned off then when I got this computer I decided it wasn't worth being paranoid and having to open up IE and visit Windows Update on the second tuesday of every month or whatever the schedule is.

I've set it up so it notifies me before downloading and installing.
