We all hate AJAX, Web 2.0 and IE

February 14th, 2006

Issue 212 of A List Apart magazine asked readers what they loved about the web and what they hated about it. It seems like people are queueing up to hate AJAX/Web 2.0 and the crap about a "whole new paradigm". I think I counted more people who dislike "AJAX" than Flash. If anything, AJAX is Flash 2.0, not Web 2.0.

A lot of people also dislike the state of Internet Explorer; I’m not surprised. It’s the browser I hate the most; it’s frustrating to use, out dated and has all kind of quirky bugs.

  1. Ajax/Web 2.0 fad
  2. Interesting AJAX Attack
  3. Xajas!
  4. Banality of Web 2.0
  5. Pure Javascript/Ajax Video Player

Personally, I think AJAX is coming off as bad because it in the majority of cases, it isn’t being used correctly.

AJAX should be used to complement the user interface, and add "ease of use" on top of functionality that exists despite AJAX availability.

People are going overboard and loading entire web sites under AJAX, and requiring AJAX for certain functions that are necessary to a web site.

I guess I agree with you. However 99% of the time I’ve seen someone discuss "AJAX" they produce something useless. AJAX Whois for example. Gmail (or Google Mail here in the UK) does use XmlHttpRequest to great effect but I don’t see any where on the site which proclaims use of AJAX or the term Web 2.0 anywhere.

"but I don’t see any where on the site which proclaims use of AJAX or the term Web 2.0 anywhere."

I didn’t know that they needed to proclaim it. Basically what you seem to be saying is you hate the terms, not the technology.

I agree with Andrew. I’ve seen it used in many places in very subtle ways and not only does it work well, but can fall back to traditional methods (server side) should a compliant browser or setting not being used.

and thats the exact reason why people hate it. IT IS NEVER IMPLEMENTED CORRECTLY! No one should have to relearn how to navigate a website because you think this ‘technology’ is great. it fucking sucks!
