MSN Messenger to be renamed Windows Live Messenger

November 1st, 2005

Microsoft launched Windows Live today. What is Windows Live? According to Microsoft:

Windows Live is based on one simple idea: that your online world gets better when everything works simply and effortlessly together. So all the things you care about online - your friends, the latest information, your e-mails, searching the Net - all come together in one place. Windows Live is a brand new Internet experience designed to put you in control. And this is just the beginning-you’ll see many more new products in the coming months.

One of the products named is Windows Live Messenger which will be the new name for MSN Messenger. MSN Messenger 7.5 will be the last version of MSN Messenger; version 8.0 will branded Windows Live Messenger. According to the Inside Windows Live Messenger blog, MSN is splitting into two brands - MSN for content such as MSNBC and Windows Live for mail (the new Hotmail), Messenger, etc.

I frequently hear people ask "What’s your MSN?" but I can’t ever imagine anyone ever saying "What’s your Windows Live?"
