David Tennant leaves Doctor Who

According to Digital Spy and a certain classy British tabloid, David Tennant is planning on quitting Doctor Who after the upcoming series. He signed a £1 million contact to make a third series (big waste of license fee IMO) but has been inundated with offers from Hollywood so wants to quit to persue them.
Opinion on Tennant and the second series has actually been quite divided. My personal opinion is Eccleston was a lot better as was the first season; with Eccleston you can take the show a little bit more seriously and the first series had much better stories. Season 2 had some really bad episodes - for example the one with Peter Kay. The whole last episode was also way overrated.
Billie Piper: 11th Doctor?
Obviously any talk of who will be replacing Tennant is all speculation at the moment. Surprisingly, I would place Billie Piper on the list of possible 11th doctors. In May, Billie Piper expressed her wish to play the Doctor. She reportedly threatened to quit the series if she was not made the Doctor.
Says Billie, "In the next few years I’d love to play a female version of Doctor Who. I know exactly how I would play her – she would be crafty in a clever kind of way."
The writer of the show told the Daily Star that he’d happily give the role to Billie if they ever needed a new Doctor. In August, it was reported that the lead writer also wanted to give Rose her own spin off series. The series would have been named "Rose Tyler: Earth Defense" and made it as far as being proposed to the BBC. In the end, it was shelved. But this opens up the possibility that Billie Piper could return to Doctor Who as the 11th doctor.
And of course, in this age of political correctness, it’s inevitable that we’ll be seeing a female Doctor Who soon.

Billie Piper would make a great Dr Who, she has carried the show in all the recent series. The last series story lines were indeed suspect but still brilliant for a Dr Who fanatic, like myself. Chris Eccleston and David Tennant have both been amazing doctors but Eccleston certainly had the best storylines. It must be difficult to keep a show like this fresh at such a pace. Billie Piper cannot be replaced, the Dr can so it makes sense to make her the first female Dr. And why not? She is certainly his equal.
I just want to say how stupid you are. Who ever wrote this article does not have a freaking clue what is going on. The bbc clearly denied any stories of Tennant’s departure publically and as for this shit with Billie Piper, she left the show so as to not get type-cast. She will not be returning as The Doctor. Get your facts straight.
Just to comment on the posting left by Rob the Nob your obviously the one in the wrong here, as just recently David Tenntant came forward and said he is leaving doctor who after the next series is aired, and the BBC have just annouced that they searching and in the process of looking for a replacement for Tenntant but have yet to release the names of the their top choices to play the role

Robert Carlyle would be a sweet doctor who the man is a genius actor as proven in his Hitler: The Rise of Evil. Anyone who can play that mad man so well can play the eccentric doctor just right too. Doubt he’ll go for it though.

Oh course there should be a female as Dr Who at some point. Any female who thinks this would be awful needs to get some self esteem going. Billie Piper would be amazing as Dr Who and it would be a very good story line if she were to come back as the Dr. The assistants can be male and some eye candy for a change. David Tennant would certainly agree that a female would be as good as a male.

I agree with the posters who suggested Paul Bettany and Chris Barrie. I also think Rose would make an excellent Doctor. Remember, when Romana was travelling with Tom Baker’s Doctor, she regenerated into the form of a princess from the previous story, so it’s not without precedent.

the show just wouldn’t be the same without him!! and a female doctor just wouldn’t fit (no offence Billie!!)But has anyone ever heard of someone who could rival the doctor in the episodes but be the assistant (that would be something worth watching rather than a female Doctor) they could have arguments about what to do and always save the day by compromising(also i think it would be good for the Doctor to be wrong for once just for laughs). And Martha isn’t avery good character-at all (sorry Freema)

its in the news today that freema agyeman is to be axed at the end of the third series. i really hope so. i dont have anything against her its just that she doesn’t seem right for the show. i still cant get over the fact that billie left and i dont think the show will be the same again. please please please bring back rose!

With regards to freema leaving - IMDB has a statement from the BBC from today (sunday)
" The BBC have now given us a short statement Saturday morning strongly denying The Sun’s claim
Official statement from the BBC:
“It is absolute rubbish that Freema Agyeman has been axed or sacked from Doctor Who. However we do not comment on future storylines.”
The statement about David leaving was also published in the sun so heres hoping they are wrong in that too

The Sun are lying scumbags. First, Freema isn’t leaving, because for those who have seen Totally Doctor Who will know that she has been caught filming scenes for season 4, so why films scenes for season 4 when she supposedly got axed in season 3, durrr coz she hasn’t. Second they made a claim that Doctor Who as a whole was going to be axed because Russell T Davis was getting tired, that turned out to be lies as proved by The Independant or the Guardian, or some paper that talks sense as a BBC spokesperson told them that, yes Russell may leave because he has been showing signs of tiredness, but he hasn’t confirmed it, and even if he does leave, Doctor Who will still go on because it rakes the dough in for the BBC. Therefore, I’m not gonna believe some cock and bull story from the Sun claiming David Tennant is leaving, I’ll believe it when I see it. Oh and having a female Time "LORD" is ridiculous, it’s like having a female James Bond. There have been Time Lady’s, but they were born that way, no Time Lord has had a sex change during regeneration.

I want David Tennant to leave as he has had 2 seasons and only 4 of them have been good. The Second Season has to be one of the worst in DW history! Doomsday is soo overrated and glad Billie is gone. Believe it or not, but I Prefer Freema Aygeman to he because she barely screams, and isnt as irritation.
David Tennant has been given a bad character of the doctor to play, and it’s not his fault that Series 2 was bad. The Sound of Drums showed that without the childish jokes and bad plots he is a good actor.
I sure hope they find a Doctor that isn’t afraid of being typeset. He’s running out of regenerations! Too bad, I really liked David Tennant… and Billie.. I think they made an excellent team. And in the end even Mickey had grown on me and was sad to see them go.

First of all, David is sooooooooooo cute and an amazing actor
Next, David should not leave he is a great Doctor and plays the role well! Each actor has their own take on the Doctor, Like Christopher Eccleston, his was more brooding. But every one has their favourites which is great. Plus loved season 2, some episodes were not as great as others but David and Billie were great together. But I have to say I do love Freema, she is a great actress, and is a great companion for the Doctor.

In relation to the article, it makes total sense. I am friends with a former cast member from season one, and he told me a number of things that turned out to be true - including that Tennant was lined up to take over from Ecclestone (this was before it was announced) He also made it clear that Davies planned for the 11th Doctor to be female. A shame, IMO, it’ll kill the series stone dead, but likely to happen.

There will be a female Dr Who eventually and I bet it will be Billie Piper because Rose looked into the heart of the Tardis and so has become part of it. A good writer can make any story plausible. When this happens all the doubting folk on here can come back and apologise for the childish name calling they indulge in merely because they can only visualise a male Doctor. It would be best if the lush David Tennant stayed forever but this is just not going to happen. I will have to go into mourning when he leaves for sure.

Re A female timelord, whoever it was who said there can’t be female Timelords because they’re TimeLORDS clearly is a bit thick. Just b/c the word is "Lord" doesn’t in any way shape or form mean there arn’t any females that are not only of the same species but are actual Timelords. In fact in some of the older series’s there WERE female Timelords in the eps. *sigh*
Ok, look, the English language is essentially a product of patriarchy, we refer to "MANkind" and "MAN", does that mean that only includes the males? Of course not. Lots of examples of this kind of thing in language.
As to Billie Piper doing it, eek! No Way! They’d need to pick someone VERY carefully, they’d need not to lose the quirkyness and fun. She couldn’t pull it off, and anyway she’s sooo recognisable as a companion and you can’t just have her magically turn into the Doctor b/c she’s travelled with him (Good God people!).
An idea would be to set the female Doctor in the parallel universe with Rose for one ep. I’d make her the 11th in the parallel simply b/c it would have people speculating about if it could be a female in the "normal" series esp. if it worked well. Also, you could say Torchwood caught/killed/imprisoned The Doctor explaining quite a few things.
As to the question of continuity, have you ever looked at the history of the Daleks esp with reference to their origins? lol

Thank God for the few posters who have actually watched the real doctor who series and not these new guys. There have been many female timelords shown on the old shows, one even became president of the counsel of timelords. I could be mistaken, but I believe The Doctor left us with the impression that Gallifrey was destroyed in the Time War. So if none fled, then he is the last of the Time Lords. Of course they could dig up another, would be nice to get a glimpse of Romana. Wish they’d go into this storyline a little more, I’d love to know why he’s so certain he’s the last of his kind.
And for those that are scared about losing Tennant as the doc, I understand. But I’ve been watching this show as long as Tennant himself, and they’ve yet to go wrong. Chin up!

I was thinking of Romana and e space when I said it, also the master still seems to be alive and if anyone becomes a female timelord it will be him, the ring appears to store him and seems to have been picked up by his wife. If she puts it on her finger I am sure the master will gladly kill her to live again. Also with the void, different dimensions,and smart timelords the scenarios are endless and if you will notice the doctor only has limited knowledge as he jumps around from point to point so things don’t become clear till later. Lets keep watching and enjoy the changes.

I live in the US and have only just discovered the latest incarnation of Doctor Who (Series 1, 2 & 3). I grew up watching it and wanting to design costumes for it. Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor back then but now David Tennant is. I hope he will stay the Doctor for a long time but only as long as he is having fun with doing the show. I think they have been doing a spectacular job on these shows-it would be so great to work on this show!!!
