Google Blog Search

September 14th, 2005

Just seen the new Google Blog Search (I don’t need to mention that it’s Beta). It does feel quite nice, a search for Google gave me two great blogs about Google and relevant blog entries. Certainly compared to Technorati’s results, Google has fantastic results. Google provides an Atom and RSS feed for results so you can subscribe to posts about something but you can also get RSS feeds of one blog from Google. Providing users with a link to Google’s RSS feed for your blog might be a good way of saving bandwidth and allowing your users to get RSS fast.

I managed to find my blog by entering “Cow’s Blog”. Presumably Google is reading the RSS feed in order to extract posts. According to Google’s FAQ, Google will update your blog information when you ping a service such as Weblogs.com. It’d be interesting to find out which ping services support Google; I use Pingoat which presumbly chain pings another service which pings Google).

Blogger’s Blog Search is mostly identical to Google’s Blog Search but with a different user interface. Not really sure which one I prefer myself :)

I’m really not sure how long the blog search engine will last. When you look for information, you don’t care whether it comes from a normal webpage or a blog. Google could do well to merge the Blog Search engine with the main search engine.
