Stealing Content From Blogs
May 18th, 2006
I just came across a site called Garblegygook which seems to be mirroring all the entries on my blog. At first I thought that they were simply mirroring Reflection.js related entries but I did a Google search for my blog posts on the site and it turned up some 60 results. I explored the site and it seemed like they were not only taking content from my blog but other popular blogs including blogs from Wordpress.com, 456 Berea Street and Signal VS Noise.
The blog entries are copied as is (though things such as images and scripts are probably removed) with no commentary. I don’t know how many entries there are exactly but it’ll probably be over 10,000 articles.
It looks to me the purpose of the website is to get crawled by Google and to appear highly in the search rankings. It doesn’t cost the owners of the site any time to create it – they simply take content from hundreds of blogs around the blogosphere. They then monetize the mirror by selling Google adverts.
I can’t find any contact details on the site nor a page explaining what the purpose of the site is. Has anyone else had their content taken by another site? How can we fight these sites? Is it right to be able to take someone else’s money and hard work and to make money from it? How far does the right to quote and reference somebody extend?
